it seems like every year at this time i write this entry. this is the slow time of year for bike shops. this is not so good for the employees but good for you. this is usually the time when repair times are short and we the mechanics are more than happy to be working. so head into your favorite shop and get that spring work done now.

santa stopped by and said we were behind as far as bike builds go. santa decided to leave some helpers behind to help us out. well the elves were a little to eager to serve. the trolls well you can see that they were ready to party. the gnomes, well you see what they did after they drank their lunch. the unicorn was just to horny, it may have been do to the trolls. the easter bunny was just pissed that he was working for someone else. he just kept saying it's not his holiday and he doesn't have any help.

Nys v Pouwels

Curious if anyone else has a racing opinion on this...
This photo was snapped right before Nys controversially leaves his line and heads toward the opposite wall. After watching the video you can see Nys look under his arm and then move. Yes I feel Nys was blocking, that said, it never appeared Pauwels had the speed to pass him anyway. On top of that, Pauwels sits up well before the line, throwing his hands in the air. This is no way to finish a race on Pauwels part. If you've ever raced, you've surely blocked someone out and as casually as Nys made his way to the opposite wall I feel he won the race fare and square. If Pauwels felt he was illegitimately being blocked and slowed he should have just kept his head down, powered through it and taken the both of them out. Fuck it.

we all know that the louisville cycling scene is awesome. we have awesome trails within the city limit pretty good roads with ok drivers and bike lanes. the number of riders is what seems to be the issue, well maybe not the number of riders. i'd say the number of shops to riders is what seems to be askew. within a 30 minute drive of downtown louisville we have nearly 20 shops. this would be a good thing if we had more riders or maybe a bigger city.

i not against someone opening a business i'm against every tom, dick, and harry opening up a shop and the claim of being the best in the city. look it's fun working in a shop and it's a great "life style" as i've heard it called but you need to be aware of your surroundings. when the pool gets water downed so much it's not good for anyone. some of these new shops don't bother to call or stop in at established shops and do the small talk and see what the climate is.

look we all know each other and news travels fast in the cycling community, so we know when times are lean and we know when things are good. look let's face it some of you aren't going to make {i don't wish ill upon anyone shop} it's happened in the past and it will happen again. i think partnerships are the way to go. has anyone thought of buying into an established shop and helping it grow into something bigger and maybe better. the song just felt right.

i really wanted to race today but i just couldn't find it in me to do it. so i headed down to take some pictures and drink some beer. yes i was heckled by many even a few prepubescent kids and was called an athletic supporter. so i guess the heckling can come from both sides of the tape. i think i may have a race somewhere in me.

the course look awesome and there seemed to be plenty of cross face to go round. beer hand ups must be done with a stiffer cup than a dixie, sorry to those of you that got no beer or just a sip.

i packed up the family for a trip to pa. to see my grandfather and enjoy a cx race in jersey. well we saw grandpa and had an awesome time. he was happy to see us and couldn't get over how our kid had grown. things you may not know about allentown are,

i didn't make to the cx race in jersey do to lots of traffic and one lane traffic on the pa turnpike. good thing i didn't make it to the race. after we made it to the hotel i found a crack in my frame when i was putting my wheels on.

we made it out to the crayola factory/store in easton and saw the worlds largest crayon. bought some tastykakes and some drake's cakes and some delicious bread that i have grown up with. yes i like to eat we i go up east.

we also made a stop at bethlehem brew works for some tasty beer. we went in search of the perfect slice, didn't find it. penn pizza was closed and settled for westgate pizza, not so good.

on the way home we stopped at the site of flight 93. the plane that crashed on 9-11 in pennsylvania. a very solemn place.

i love what i do, it is my life. i just love bikes. when i see people that aren't into it or aren't willing to get into it, it pisses me off.

i was talking to my brother last night, those of you that know me or my brother know this is an odd occurrence. the really odd part was that my brother gave me some insight and is the reason for the post. as i listened to my brother some of the descriptions above came into my head. the more he talked the more i listened. then he started on things that were going on in the world {this was a real eye opener}. he went as far to talk about his job and how much he cared about it and it made him happy. then we talked about how this economy is an all about employers. they know that most people have no where to go and they are stuck and just making the best of it, but the employer treats the employee poorly. i don't really know where i'm going with this, but times will get better and hang in there. you know who you are.

First trip to Fort Duffield

Thanks to some friends and a loaner dirt jumper I got to make my first trip out to Fort Duffield yesterday. After about 4+ hours of riding, a handful of beers and a few minutes exploring here and there (if you haven't seen that cave lookout spot, you're missing out) we called it a day. That place is too fun and can't wait to make it back. This also has me ready to get one of those single speed dirt jumper style mountain bike doodads. The only thing I think I'd change, or add rather, would be a front brake. There were quite a few times I went flying into some downhill turn that an little more breaking power would have left me with my feet on the pedals and not looking like I was shooting for a bike review in a 80's BMX mag. While the actual jumps were fun I enjoyed bombing down the hills jumping, bunny hopping and manualing everything in sight without having to get smacked in the ass and bucked around like I would have on my XC bike. Escaping the day tic free I felt like was an added bonus too.

If you haven't had the chance to ride Duffield I'd strongly recommend it regardless of whatever style MTB you prefer.

cx practice sunday night after 6, you know for us regular guys and girls. i'm pretty sure we will be cutting in a new course. it should be fun and we have about 6 people showing so far. it will be more towards the east side of town for easy access for most. the site will be u of l shelby campus. we should have some barriers and beer. park at pf chang's and ride over.

a few years ago lg&e was sold and man power was cut and prices went up. makes perfect sense, right? well this is the 3rd year that my power has gone out because of a storm and it was off more than 3 days.

it always amazes me how clean and how empty my refrigerator and deep freeze can get. another sad thing besides no power and higher prices is what a $150 worth of groceries looks like. time to ride through the neighborhood and check out the damage. one beer in hand and one in the holder. enjoy the pics.

Props to a Fallen Friend

Yes, I lost a friend over the weekend while riding at Waverly ... my thirteen year love affair with my mountain bike wheels came to an abrupt end when four spokes removed themselves from the rim all at once. It was as if to say, "we love you and we've been there for you through good times and bad, but on this day, we just don't have it in us anymore." Of course there were signs that the end was near - bent and broken spokes here and there, cracking, bulging and splitting of the rim at the spoke nipples, a slight pinging noise when under power, re-truing before every ride - but each and every trip until now, these guys brought me home. Even in the end, they had my back ... they held on until the last mile and a half of a sixteen mile ride. So, after it was all said and done it was fitting that utlimately, I carried them home.

Of course, it it weren't for John Molnar, we never would have met. So, here's to John, my wheels, and Jeff Schwinn where the introduction took place!

For those of you wanting to pay respects, simply tip your helmet to the next set of Bontrager Mustang rims still in service on the trails and if they happen to be laced up to Nuke Proof Superfly hubs, well just know that you are standing in front of greatness.

the louisville dirt club cx team has decided on the beer sponsor. we had a lot of offers come in. pbr was the front runner of awhile but it so cliche and we didn't want to be that kind of a hipster team. the high life was in there but we didn't want the 7 ounce bottles become part of an incident towards the end of the day. then the offers started coming in from europe, well this was great but we really didn't want to give up our american roots for the sports european.

after all the the taste testing and too close to calls we came up with a beer that cover both parameters. hands down stroh's. a european looking label (german heritage) but started in the states in detroit.

i have many projects at the moment bike and no-bike. this one goes right to the head of the class. i worked on the generator and it works. front and rear bulbs are good. a good cleaning and some new rubber, i can't wait. sorry new cx bike, sorry new to me single speed frame you have to wait. i'll still need to do some painting on the house.
