because i have to be pissed about something

just so you hipsters know none of your fly by night companies came up with the belt drive system. i remember spot out of colorado having a belt drive bike some time back. i just got off the phone with a shop owner that was just wanting to vent. so i'm game i took the bait. he has issues with bike shop owners and employees not knowing their shit. what gives he says. so i tell him look man this city has a lot of shops and not enough people to staff then. it just happens. it's not just the bike industry it's everywhere. also last week i received a call from jackie green wanting me to come work for him. i was flattered and declined do to the fact that i work at schellers now. so he goes on to ask what about my other job a t the car dealer. i tell him that it is closing and i was going to be out of work. this jerk weed is happy that the dealer is closing, jobs lost, families in a pinch. he viewed the car dealer as the competition. whaa? i guess i'm missing something or is he.

  1. man, sorry about the dealership. sucks to lose your job, regardless of where it is.

as far as people not knowing their shit. . . there is one particular shop that I feel this about. they are hell bent on selling you on some "hip" company or modifying your bike to look cool. all i have to say is there is a reason that they make specific parts for specific applications. they just work better that way. sure you can jerry rig something to kind of do what you want, but you are going to have problems down the road.

and it is readily apparent the employees at these shops who don't know what they are doing. unfortunately it is not so apparent to someone just starting to ride. it took me several tries to figure this out. now i go to a few select shops when i need advice/parts. i only venture to one of the "other" shops when it is not practical to visit my regular shops. by the way, one of my regular shops is oylc. you passed on the shop to good hands and i regularly refer people there.

i hope everything works out with the dealership closing (i.e. you and your co workers find new jobs).

  2. actually it's not about any one shop. it's more just a general statement based on customer feedback. it's funny when you work at a shop you become much more than a mechanic for your customers. i have heard lots of things, some of you have even told me about the birth of your kids before you told your parents. now that says something. roy i actualy got out of the dealer in time and have a job at a shop again. thank god for a second set of skills. i glad the guys at oylc are still taking care of you. hopefully i'll see you out there soon.

  3. c'mon...this town when it comes to the LBS is nothing but one big soap opera. under cutting, back stabbing, blah blah blah blah blah...

it seems anyone that can squeaze their ass into a set of banana hammocks are the supreme authority of cycling in this town and most will spend their time holding up the walls of the favorite LBS just to talk shit on other people and shops.

i've been busting my ass for over 20 plus years, ranked amongst the best of the veteran pros and i still can't get any respect from the cycling community here...be it bmx, mtb or road... character assasinations suck and you can't bounce back from them. so i just try to let my results and community service speak for itself..

i'm at OYL one day. a rep comes in from spy and i start asking about sponsorship opportunities. dude acts like i'm some motofill old dude and i don't expect him to know who i am, however, i was hoping that one of the owners would have spoken up and give me a little support and inform the guy that i would be a good person to help out and i could help sales...but alas...one goes on to compare how he's just as likely to get a sponsorship from them than i would...wtf is that all about?! really...how many titles, pro main event wins and years racing do you have under your belt?? i'm pretty sure 0 on title and pro wins.

sorry for the rant Lonestar...guess the rain has my panties in a bunch too...

  4. man some of reps don't know the product nor do they know the locals. it's the job of the shops and employees to bring them {reps} up to speed with the area. i'm not saying they should just had out sponsorships but sometimes they need to show some love. note: you are one bad ass when it comes to bmx. that i know for a fact, as the comp. and spectator. that's love.

  5. 2x4,

I don't know you from any one else in the crowd, but know of you. Trust me, your name proceeds you.

And I could care less about the soap opera crap at the shops. I just want someone who knows what the hell they're doing and is honest. Even within the shops I go to there are people I would not listen to. And I don't know much honestly, just enough to get me in trouble and I am definitely not in the "in crowd" on cycling.

I'm sorry to see that you lost your job at the dealer ship and I am sure there are some other good honest people there that made a descent honest living.

The sales staff there and at any other car dealer ship can take a shit and fall in it for all I am concerned. I will never forget buying my first car from Cardinal Dodge and how bad I was screwed over because I didn't understand the game. Then on my 2nd car purchase I was a little more wise, but still none the less both the dealers I went to for that purchase tried to take advantage of the situation.

I have learned to play their game now, but is bullshit that it has to be played. And I don't buy the argument that they are just tring to make a living. You don't try to make a living by seeing how you but fuck someone by seeing how much you can overcharge someone for something they believe they have to have.

As far as bike shops go, I have been dealing with ONYL and I have been really pleased with the way Derrick and Drew are running the business. I feel really confident in sending people there. They are doing a great job at making cheap fixes work instead of recommending the most expensive option first. There service is great.
