with all of the strange weather as of late you need to take note. remember it did snow and there was ice, then there was salt and brine. then the rain came. yes, your bike was out in all of that, either in transport or riding.
the most common problems to come across my bench these last 2 weeks have been: cables seized up, front derailleur spring either rusted or frozen in there place and some broken cables at the point of insertion. the break in the cable at the shifter was probably because of a worn cable and extra grit in the cable housing. get your bike checked by a shop of do it yourself.
