mud question

so, being new to this whole mountain bike tom foolery i've found that it somehow seems frowned upon to go pedal said mountain bike on muddy trails. this, i am utterly confused by. mountain bikes are by their very nature rugged, shit flinging, rebel rousing vehicles. why the hell is it wrong to go slop up the trails? i understand the erosion and rut factors that happen upon said ventures, but so fucking what?! i thought that was all part of the deal. is it just serving the lowest common denominator in mountain biking? if so, fuck that too, i get enough of that garbage having my kids go to public school. i'm going riding, if someone wants to give me shit about making a mess of the trails or skidding through a bunch of shit, you'll have to keep up, i'm having too much fun to wait around and listen to you cry.

  2. Man... I wouldn't have wasted my time even posting that Jimmy. Ride. Get muddy. Have fun. I ride muddy trails sometimes and they heal. I've seen trails after a hundred+ racers had ridden them during rain storms. There was no devastating erosion that shut the trail down permanently. There were ruts, but after a week or so they were gone. Keep having fun and keep the mud outa your eyes.

  3. like i've said, i'm new to all this so i just don't know. regardless, i'm still curious what the deal is with the mindset against it?

  4. i guess it's all about taking care of the trails and doing what's "right". keeping the trails in usable sustainable condition without doing damage to nature is the goal. the land owners give us the priveledge of using their property with the expectation that we won't erode the soil or create new trails with damage to the plant and critter life. i don't know. sometimes you have to use better judgement and stay off the trails, but for the most part... mud is mud and fun to ride in.

  5. i think there's a set of guidelines set up by imba or something. i too was confused by the "don't ride muddy trails" mindset. i mean, is this MTB or what?!

i think the olmsted people or louisville parks dept. had threaten to ban MTB from the parks because of all the ruts and i'm willing to bet some runners were getting pissed...

all i know is that the older i get the less i want to ride in mud. the ride home in the car sucks, cleaning my bike of all the mud sucks and it just makes for a lousy ride for me...

that's just my observations. i do think that OTHRE MTBers would get more adherence to the "don't ride the muddy trails" message if they convey it in a better fashion than, "just don't do it!" big country got all up in my face years ago about it when he was the president of kymba and you know what that made me want to go do? ride muddy trails even more...

so...that's just me Jimmy..i might be way off base..

  6. Go do some trail work, sweat, bleed and get back aches from it and you'll think different dipshit.

  7. Better yet, let me come trash your house and you clean up after me. I mean whats the big deal, isn't your house there for me to fuck up and not worry about it?? Do us a favor and go ride down the trail with your eye's close and eat a fucking tree.

  8. LOL...

Trail work = removing obstacles or anything challenging on a trail so guys all kitted up can keep their heart rate up while riding $5000 full suspension bikes, when the trail is more suited for a hardtail.

No-Net used to be a blast, then it got 'paved.' There were a couple of fun challenging parts but then the 'trail work' happened, now riding the trail is not much different than riding on Beargrass Rd. JMNSHO

  10. hahaha! i love the internet. captain trail work anonymous likes to think i haven't put in my share of back breaking dirt maintenance?! i just got into riding mountain bikes and the more i get involved you can bet i'll be out there raking, shoveling, sweating and bleeding.

captain anonymous needs to go find a BMX track with unpaved turns and get the thing ready for race day after a major downpour.

  11. Well said Mr. Anonymous. Could ya slip in any more curse words in there? I'm always doing trail work when I'm out riding. I actually did a little work last night out @ BH (more than Oldham has done out there lately). Moved a few big branches, myself and two other guys moved a rather large tree off the trail and I can't count how many small pieces of broken branches I kicked off the trail while riding. All this while giving a tour of the place to two others who had never ridden there. Oh yeah... plenty of mud out there last night :) Got anything to say about that?

PS: My name goes on everything I post... I'm just sayin'.

  12. Where exactly is BH and is it worth the trip. I live near Oldham but have never been.

  13. Briar Hill

It's west of Crestwood on Hwy 22

I like it because it's rocky in places and more natural in terrain... it's like 70's bush compared to Cherokee's Brazilian Wax ;)

  15. racerxtr... Keith's got the location correct. It's in the Orchard Grass/Briar Hill subdivision. There is between 5-7 miles of technical singletrack back there. I love it (because it's in my back yard). Others kinda dismiss it as a waste of gas to get to the park. It doesn't get as much love as the other local trails, but if you're in Oldham... you might want to check it out and decide for yourself.

  18. Thanks but I just saw this. I went yesterday and could not find anywhere near 6 miles of trail but what I saw was interesting and fun and not as bad as I've heard. Pretty ggod shape. I am going to explore more since I'm exactly equal distance between BH and Seneca.

  19. Let me know if you need a little tour of the place. I can get ya those 6 miles (or pretty damn close). I'll be home this weekend if you're interested.
